Hey Everyone...does anyone know of a respectable and reputable shop that can install and adjust rear-end gears for my early 4th gen? I don't want to spend an arm and leg for this either...but then who does! Also...anyone have any ideas of what brand of gear works the best for street use and the occasional run at the track? I'm going from 2.73's to 3.73's, but I'm not sure who to go with...Motive, GM, Richmond, etc., anyone have any suggestions or experience?

Thanks,

Hi Rick,

I just dropped my Strange 12-bolt off Tuesday morning to get new gears installed. I took it to Ron's Auto Service at 8350 W Washington Street. Their number is 317-248-0800 and here is their website: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Actually, the shop next door, which Ron (Beaman) also owns, is handling the gear install. It used to be called Patterson Drive Shaft but is now called Accurate Driveline and Machine (ADM). They rebuilt my 12-bolt in 2004 after I blew up the posi at IRP and charged me $360 for the labor (I supplied the parts). They quoted me $300 - $500 this time (labor only) so I am hoping it will be closer to $300 ;-) Be sure and check out the coupons section on their website for 10% off.

I use US Gear (Strange) in my 12-bolt. Strange Engineering also uses Motive Gear. I don’t think you can go wrong with the GM gears but they may cost more. I’ve heard that Richmond gear sets tend to be a little noisier but I do not have any first hand experience with them. You should get a noticeable SOTP (seat of the pants) improvement going from 2.73 to 3.73 gears!!

Thanks Danny...I've used Ron before on a different project, and I was pleased with his work. I didn't even think of his shop for the gears...go figure! Thanks for the info! Very Happy

You're welcome. They charged me $351.54 for the gear change and that was before using the discount coupon. I did have the rear end assembly out of the car so they may have charged me slightly less than if it was still in the car.
